History
The original inhabitants of Accra are the Ga. Ga is also the name of two surrounding districts; Go East and Go West. Present-day Accra developed into a significant place around British and Dutch forts built there in the seventeenth century. In 1877, Accra became the capital of the British Gold Coast colony, succeeding Cape Coast. After a railway was built to the mines and the agricultural hinterland, Accra developed into the economic center of Ghana.

Accra is home to the National Museum, the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Archives and the Central Library. Worth mentioning is Christiansborg Castle, which was built by the Danes in the seventeenth century.
